What a Difference a Door Makes.


All of these doors are in Old New Castle, Delaware, just a short drive from Wilmington. William Penn first landed in (old) New Castle in 1682 on the banks of the Delaware River. The former county seat and center of Colonial government (before Penn established Philadelphia) still has fewer than 5,000 residents.

There's a home and garden tour every May. And there's a great little pub called Jessop's if you're ever in the neighborhood.

    I love Olde Newcastle! We had friends who lived there and it was sort of halfway between NYC and Baltimore, so it was a natural meeting place. We used to have great picnics at the park on the river. Loads and loads of great memories there. I always recommend it for an easy day trip.

    I am very surprised these are all in Delaware. I live right outside of Philadelphia and around here you never see shutters on doors, I thought that was only in the south. MB

    The yellow hiding under blue is my fave.

    They're all over Delaware, not just New Castle. I'll take photos when I can of my neighborhood and the beach.

    I remember trying to describe to a painter in the Midwest a bright color of blue for my front door that I had seen in a magazine and he thought I was insane.

    I will always prefer the black door....it just gives the home a grand but mysterious entrance. It does make quite a difference. It's like an accessory for the home.

    I love black. My last door was black with a brass fox knocker. My favorite so far and the new owners removed the knocker!! and repainted the door red with a green screen door. :-( It makes me sad every time I drive by.

    I'm a fan of the black door too. Our door and shutters at the last house were Charleston green (3 parts black to 1 part green) so it was a similar effect.

    They painted your old door red and added a green storm door? People are insane. Unless you sold to Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

    Fabulous photo montage of historic property doors! My favorite would be the fourth example, with the louvered doors and the brass ornament above.
