HG declared the year 1965 the year of PINK, as you can see by the cover the the September issue. Bamboo was big, as was flamestitched fabric. Plantation shutters and Parson's tables were also in vogue (click on photos to enlarge).
Pink wasn't the only color of the year. Colors were divided into Sweet Pales, Subtle Smokes and Bright Accents. The room above combined the subtle smokes of putty walls and mushroom ceiling with a "burst of azalea on the armchairs." They considered the green at the time to be a subtle neutral as well as my favorite, timeless neutral, leopard.
As you can see, skins were "way in" in a room of espresso and mushroom with an ultramarine accent.
"Off-white plus off-black is the newer, more subtle version of the classic contrast of opposites" as seen in this living room. More skins, a Venetian mirror over the fireplace and chinoiserie screen in the corner. With the exception of the fabric being corduroy - Belgian linen corduroy - this room looks pretty modern. Oh, yeah, and the ruched festoon curtains? Hopefully that will stay a 1965 and Munsters trend.
This photo is from the September 1964 issue. "Off-black plus white plus color" equals fabulosity!! All these zebra rugs have me wondering if Margaret Russell has been in this business longer than we think. :-)
Hope you enjoyed this blast from the past. There's more to come.

Really pretty contemporary. I honestly think designers stockpile these vintage mags and just recycle the trends.
The Munster's trend. Too funny. Although I thought Eddie was kind of cute in a creepy way. It is true, no ides is a new idea, it seems. Just recycled.
idea...sorry
Sooooo, didja find a garage sale with a stack of old HG magazines or something? Really fab stuff.
A few tweaks and any of those rooms could be published today. No one would bat an eye.
Maybe Margaret R. is one of the undead.
Margaret is the Ghost of Decor Past. Great post...I wish I had saved all of the issues my ex-MIL had given me. They ended up in the Great Purge of all Things Starter Husband.
those animal skin rugs are to DIE FOR. where did they ever go?
Dec - Actually, they're my eBay stash. I got a bunch from the 40s and some from the 60s.
The colors of some of the 60's spreads are so bright they'll put your eye out.
LOVE the last photo!
OMD, Margaret as zombie decorator. I die.
I can't wait to see more! Love these shots!!
Great stuff, HG, and I so miss House and Garden. I have a number of years worth of issues, but nothing this far back. It's crazy how some of those rooms look so contemporary. I love that last photo!
I have some old ones too that I love to look at - but that one with the zebra - the first zebra - that looks new - amazing. I love that!!!!
I've never been a fan of animal rugs.
I relate, Greta. I like my animals alive. I have a zebra skin but it's needlepoint.
And my antlers are naturally shed on resin skulls.
It was really to illustrate how design comes and goes around.
Great post!
