I think it's the internet in general, and the rise in interest-based blogging specifically.
The sheer amount of information and images out there, and the ease and speed with which people can access it, mean trends are viewed by huge audiences almost instantly.
People see something, use it, photograph it, blog about it, and the cycle starts all over.

I don't have an answer other than "monkey see, monkey do," but I am ready to pledge a commitment to that throw.
Although I guess it's been going on for awhile or rusty orange and avocado green would not conjure the 70s in a heartbeat.
