DominoFireplace season is coming to a close. I can feel it. The birds are singing, spring is in the air. Cozy up while you can.
And what are the rules or ideas at the very least for decorating a mantle? I can never find things that look good.

I wish I could light the fireplace in my office, but it's closed off. If I put a bunch of candles in it, i'd probably be fired for violating health & safety rules!
For mantles I always find that less is more. Mine always ended up with a mirror above, until this house with two fireplaces and not one mantle. Instead, in this 1953 house I have three stair stepped brick brackets...it is a real challenge. All the homes around here have some similar arrangement...with predictibly strange decorating as a result. One woman just had the entire fireplace rebuilt, out of frustration, I'm sure.
Do you know that my husband lit a fire just the other night, and we realized that the flue had been open since the last time we had a fire???? And that's been a month or so ago! Bad...
For your mantle, I always find that a cool pair or bunch of candlesticks or hurricanes is nice and easy.

Our mantel is in a room with a 25 foot ceiling. I am CLUELESS.

Rachel - My husband and I were discussing the fact that we leave our huge fireplace flue open all year and how energy efficient that must be (and we have the bills to prove it - yikes!).

I have the balsa wood mount over my cooktop in the kitchen. I loved it when I bought it, but now it just seems ubiquitous. We light the fireplace all of the time, no matter what the temperature outside. I just crank down the A/C.
Ooh, I love the bench in front of the fireplace. Extraordinary! By the way, I almost always wear scarves as well!

I can't resist a good fireplace...
It freezes here, but only at 3 am in the morning, and only a for a few random days each year.
I really hate the cold, so I kind of love it. Until it's 105 for 30 days in a row during July.
ooh to have a working fireplace - all of ours our just non-working relics to an earlier time (the chimneys are too unsafe to use). As for decorations I have a collection of 3 white milk glass vases with different patterns - although I am starting to get bored of them now... So I am in the same boat.
